Rapid Response to Mass Shooting in Odessa, Texas
As the mass shootings of 2019 continue to rise, most recently in Odessa, Texas with seven dead and 22 wounded, it is time we take action. The commonality of these incidents – and the trauma and suffering experienced by not only those directly impacted, but all people of this country – has become a stark reality of American life. A reality that is not only preventable, but also unacceptable. Our children and our citizens face gun violence at epidemic rates in the United States. It is time for our elected officials to stop the cycle of platitudes and inaction after these devastating events – it is time for action and meaningful reform.
NPEIV applauds the recent movements within the corporate sector highlighted by the letter sent today to the Senate from 145 CEOs demanding reforms and Walmart attempts to prohibit open carrying of firearms in their stores. However, it is the responsibility of Congress and the President to meaningful address this issue. As emphasized in today’s letter sent by the 145 CEOs to the Senate, “Doing nothing about America’s gun violence crisis is simply unacceptable and it is time to stand with the American public on gun safety.”
We cannot accept these acts of violence as routine within America. It is time for change, and it is time for reform. NPEIV calls upon Congress to stop ignoring the epidemic of gun violence in America and enact meaningful reforms to protect our children, our communities and all Americans.
