NPEIV Virtual Think Tank 2021

OPENING PANEL

Violent Extremism: Strategies for Change

Saturday, August 28, 2021 | 9:00 am - 5:30 pm Pacific Time

It has been said that violent extremists pose a steady and evolving threat of violence and economic harm to our country. What is the reality about it as we know it today? Trends may shift, but the underlying drivers for violent extremism—which may include socio-political conditions, racism, sexism and anti-Semitism, just to name a few—remain constant.

Dr. Carolyn Petrosino, PhD, Professor Emerita, Bridgewater State University, will be providing the background for the panel by discussing factors that contribute to violent extremism and hate crimes within the social context of this country. She will strive to connect the dots and present the underlying factors to help the audience understand racially motivated violence, extreme ideological beliefs, and who or what are their targets. Specifically, Dr. Petrosino will address the issue of White Supremacy as she sees it play out in social forces that support violent extremism. She will inform the audience about the role advocacy or professional organizations play in addressing the issue of violent extremists or perpetrators of hate crimes.

Additional panelists include Ms. Sandy Dang, MPA, MSW, Co-founder and Principal of Colnnovate Consulting, LLC; Ms. Valarie Shultz-Wilson, Nonprofit Management Consultant, President & CEO of the Urban League of Southern Connecticut; and Dr. Kimberly J. Cook, PhD, Professor of Sociology & Criminology at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

The four additional panelists will each have 20-25 minutes to discuss the realities of violent extremism within their communities. This may include strategies/actions for change that might underscore individual, family, social, and community action steps that must happen to end the threat of violent extremism, based on their own area of expertise.

After the five panelists have presented, there will be a 20-min question and answer period, facilitated by Ms. Joyce N. Thomas, RN, MPH, PNP, FAAN, President/CEO & Co-founder, Center for Child Protection and Family Support, NPEIV Board Member.
