Relationship Health and Safety for Military and Veteran Families
In addition to the life stressors experienced in the general population, Veterans and their families face additional unique stressors and risks such as long periods of separation due to deployment and training, higher than average experiences of trauma, injuries, medical and mental health concerns, and greater risks for homelessness and suicide. Some of these Veteran-specific concerns will be discussed to increase understanding and competency in working with Veterans and their families in the community.
As the largest integrated healthcare system in the nation, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) recognizes the unique sacrifices and vulnerabilities of Veterans, their families and their caregivers, and provides a vast array of treatment and support programs to meet their needs. VA programs under the Veterans Healthcare Administration (VHA) umbrella are informed by the tenants of whole health and trauma-informed care, with a unique understanding of the experiences, strengths and needs of Veterans and their families.
The National Partnership to End Interpersonal Violence Across the Lifespan (NPEIV) invites you to join us for a special presentation on “Relationship Health and Safety for Military and Veteran Families: Veterans Health Administration Programs.” This presentation will provide community attendees with basic information about the VA Healthcare System, programs and services that serve and/or support transition Military members, Veterans and their families. Two key programs serving Veteran partners and caregivers will be highlighted in detail. These include the Caregiver Support Program (CSP) and the Intimate Partner Violence Assistance Program (IPVAP) will be discussed at length. Risks and concerns unique to the Veteran population will be presented to increase understanding and competency in working with Veterans and their families in the community.
