Nonoffending caregivers are integral to the effective investigation and treatment of child victims of sexual abuse. This presentation will review commonly misinterpreted caregiver reactions and identify ways to respond. Participants will be able to identify cultural differences as crucial for establishing a supportive relationship with caregivers and recognize the importance of integrating caregivers following a disclosure of child sexual abuse. Effectively engaging caregivers and offering them with the necessary resources and services allows them to make decisions that can safeguard their child’s future. Implications for research, practice and policy are discussed.
